“Marine dew” is the beautiful Latin name (Ros marinus) of this virtuous and cozy Mediterranean plant that is rosemary. Rosemary crowns embellished the bride and groom, and rosemary was said to stimulate the memory of Greek students. A symbol of love, fidelity, and friendship, rosemary also served as an antimicrobial to purify the atmosphere of terrible epidemics of plague, or to strengthen the soul of mummified pharaohs. Formerly, in Sicily, dolls were made in the image of sick people to hasten their healing. A renowned aromatic plant of scrubland and maquis, it accompanies traditional dishes of the South and undoubtedly was considered a panacea, especially in herbal tea, alongside its sunny companion, lavender. Together, their essential oils soothe poststroke pain.

Its down, under its rolled-edge leaves, allows it to retain water, and its subshrubs bloom throughout the year with soft hues of blue, lilac, or white, depending on the location. New Roots Herbal has selected a Spanish essential oil of camphorated rosemary leaves, more specific to rheumatology and trauma.

Camphor is found in mucolytic pectoral ointments and in renowned pain relievers. Athletes are fond of it, as it promotes the elimination of lactic-acid crystals, a source of cramps, fatigue, and pain. Camphor is antinevralgic and anti-inflammatory, and it relaxes striated muscles and is externally repulsive. Camphorated rosemary essential oil (EO) is analgesic and relieves muscular or rheumatic pains.

Its painkiller, diuretic, and vein decongestant properties explain its effectiveness for menstrual pain but also for heavy legs, water retention, and cellulite. A good nerve regulator, this EO will cure both apathy (tonic at low dose) and overexcited state (soothing high dose). Rosemary fights slow digestion, and its traditional use of liver detoxification is not stolen, thanks to the antioxidant action of its flavones, diterpenes, and rosmarinic acid. Finally, rosemary EO lowers cholesterol as well as overweight.

Caution: The EO’s ketones make it neurotoxic for children under 6, epileptics, and pregnant women (abortive). This invites to scrupulously respect topical dosages.
